enter the oldest part of Old Melbourne Gaol.  new prisoners were silenced and separated on the first floor as part of their punishment.  (even wore silence hoods when they were outside their own cell.)  they stayed in their cells for 23 hours a day.  if they followed the rules well, they could move upstairs and were given outdoor labor during the day.
