san clemente was a happy surprise. we read that it could be cool, but it was rather incredible. here is the entrance to the garden and the church.
the church is from the 12th century. below the church is another church from the 4th century with some nicely preserved frescoes. below that are some ancient roman buildings containing a nobleman's home that was converted into a temple of mithras.
the catacombs were fantastic, and were set up really well. little led lanterns, blurbs in english. . . i wish i could share pictures but they don't allow pictures anywhere inside. i was fine with obeying as i walked around the mazelike hallways. i figured i'd buy some great postcards or a book that had decent pictures. . . but there was nothing decent topside. the church was really nice as well, but couldn't take pictures of that either.
in other words. . . san clemente is one of the coolest places (did i mention there were two underground streams?) where you can't take pictures.
